There are times when an awesome color washes out faster than some of your Tinder dates last but there are some simple ways to help it stay longer. ( the color that is )
Now a permanent color only is as good as the condition of your hair generally so if your hair is shot to pieces ( aka destroyed ) you need to firstly work on that before thinking of changing things up too much. We have all seen someone’s ends dramatically faded a few weeks after a color, it’s because the hair condition is not good enough to hold color. The cuticle May be destroyed so much no matter what you do it simply won’t hold.
Here are a few things you can do to help yourself ( just like you need to do after that hook up )
Use Sulfate free shampoo – Sulfate is the detergent that can strip color!
Regular trims – removes split and damaged ends preventing split ends to travel up the hair shaft
Don’t over heat your hair – dehydrates it and causes split ends and melting of the hair nothing on this planet can fix!
Avoid too much sun, it bleeches the hair.
Avoid using any kind of oil, yes yes we said don’t use oil. It increases the heat of your hair and will dehydrate ( even if it’s only small deposits left after shampooing it )it not add anything to it! It may look shinny from the coating but will be rough.
Get yourself a clear gloss color over your color, it seals it in and helps dramatically hold the color!
Now if it’s still fading come see us and let’s work out why!
Because we all like to be rebels, the moment you hear this you may be already planning on giving it a shot. Certain things are harmless to try a DIY and certain things are not, after all I guess years of study there are things that will be taught you can’t get from a 3 1/2 minute YouTube video ( but then again who knows right!)
Things not to try yourself
Replacing your hard drive
Refilling gas cylinders
Cutting or colouring your own hair
Giving your self a hair transplant ( or kidney transplant for that matter )
Waxing your Va-jay-jay
And no I didn’t slip the hair ones in to be all dramatic, we have seen some whoppers come try and fixing it after things have gone terribly wrong. Understand some things are better done by someone who does it for a living after studying for years.
It’s a fairly common request ” I want to be ash blonde” typically like it’s ordering a pizza with little understanding what’s involved or if it’s even possible. After all that’s our job so we are cool with it, but want to shed some light on the facts about it.
Now without getting overly technical the above photo is not on dark hair, the base color is lighter and has a slightly warmer tone, the highlights however are ash so the two combined give you what you are seeing not the individual “ash” color.
The darker you are the more gold/red pigment your hair has & will throw off when it’s lightened.
To get “ash” your hair must be lightened ( it doesn’t come out of a tube, it’s a process and not typically a short one either ) and to keep the hair in one piece would require 2-3 applications then toning. Sadly I have seen foils being done and irons or a hairdryer put over the foils to speed it up ( your hair will be fried, cuticle will snap off and I can guarantee it’s gold as your reading this. Bleaching hair you should not add heat, you can’t speed up the process! There is no short cuts only bad decisions and poorly educated people doing it or endorsing the wrong people.
So can it be ash on dark hair?
Yes but check out the photo above, you can see super light sections and some slightly gold right, that’s because it’s done over several sittings to get the hair light and keep it on your head.
Now whilst you think you may want ash, chances are even after you get it ( if it’s possible ) you will have upkeep you will need to do in order for it to stay the right tone!
Possible yes, easy no but possible and for those claiming you have ash, this is what ash actually looks like!
So if you have had a bad color, give us a call let’s see what we can do to get your hair instagram ready!
So recently we were told about several people that promoted DIY hair, no they were not hairdressers, actually nothing to do with hair, you know those people who are blessed at knowing everything.
How to do this or that and almost like an authority you almost think omg it must work, beautiful photos of fruit and veggies 🌶 you kinda get sucked in. Let’s face it we have all googled to find a cheap cure for something at some stage 😳.
Well when it’s hair and you’re on a budget best thing is to go too a professional salon tell them what your wanting and give them a budget, see what can be done, maybe nothing or maybe just maybe you will get close to your dream Hair the right way. Maybe getting it done right the first time will save you money and time also.
Your hair has been as dark as the night since the day you were born and like all things grass is always greener on the other side of the fence and you want to be blonde!
Well you’re right, anything is possible after all Kim Kardashian did it so why not you right?
It can be done but there are a few things you should know before taking the plunge.
It is a lengthy process, certainly not a ” lunchbreak” kind of color. Depending on how your hair reacts and what we start with can take 6-8 hours or even 6-8 hours over 2-3 days. Yes it’s a process
Maintainence is little you really need to use a toning shampoo and conditioner. This helps maintain the tone as it can go brassy ( yellow/gold ) over the coming weeks.
If your hair has been coloured then even if the current result it looks the same from roots to ends bleaching over it can cause a lot of damage.
Regrowth, well depending on how dark you are but if your going blonde then even light brown looks black as it’s growing out. Expect a trip to the salon every 2-3 weeks for the regrowth. This won’t be as time consuming but still not a quick trip.
If all that hasn’t put you off then it’s time to go blonde I guess!
So your the type of person who crashes at your friends place, always leaves your wallet at home & always look for the cheaper way to get things done.
Now whilst we all hate you, because your constant cry poor nonsense and your constant buying of clothes, shoes and electronics ( yes we all noticed! ) you try mixing home remedies for your hair because you think it’s cheaper!
Well the biggest problem with trying to duplicate experience when it comes to hair color or hair care is that hair depth, density, strength and porosity varies dramatically from person to person and then vary from month to month. With that being said a “home remedy” or a DIY today may work, tomorrow may be a total disaster. A harmless Color that your told is “natural” makes even the most mild bleech react and turn your hair to straw!
I guess it’s only when things go terribly wrong, you realise that there may be more to this than your grandmothers remedies. Before trying to do things yourself, always get professional advice from a professional salon.
An important fact to remember, the home remedies done 100 years ago were done on hair that was exposed to far less than it is today. Pollution, chemicals in water, chemicals in food and the list goes on. It’s a complete different world today that we are exposed too than it was 20,30,50 years ago.
You may have grown up eating meat and two veg type food ( boring and a little basic ) or in India Dhal & rice. That doesn’t mean that there are not more options out there, because there are endless possibilities.
Just like your wardrobe, although obviously any hairdresser will typically lean towards black, hair color options are far greater that a base color and a few highlights. It’s your blank canvas that expresses who you are and your personality.
You don’t have to be outrageous or OTT it just has to be an extension of your personality.
Why wait, give your hair salon a call and give your hair some color!
No matter where you look you see color and it changes your perception of life when you see certain colors your mind reacts and feelings are born. Blue skies create happy feelings, grey skies and you feel like curling up in bed all day.
With that in mind, hair has to be an extension of your personality and whilst the cut it the foundation of it the color is what brings it all together to create the feeling.
Doesn’t matter if your color goals are to be as loud as a My little pony doll or as subtle as playing a Led Zeplin song backwards it’s all possible. The only way you will get a color that not only matches your cut and face is if you have an in depth discussion with a professional and assess the options.
There are moments that a little fade is normal and expected, hair has the capacity at times to retain color if the condition is right and Maintainence is sorted.
Then there are times when fading is not acceptable. Now with so many so called Beauty experts, beauty bloggers, mothers and grandmothers it’s hard to know who to listen too or who to trust and depending on who you ask or at what time as to the answer you get.
We like to think of ourselves as experts and I guess studying for 4 years full time to call ourselves “Hairstylists” gives us the right to tell you what to believe. It’s not a gage of who knows best but if the color is meant to be done by hairstylists one would imagine that they know how it should be maintained?
A few things to consider to prevent your color from fading
The depth and longevity of your color is determined amoungst other factors varied on the condition and color your colouring over ( if it’s been bleeched white, you can not expect the hair to hold the same as natural hair for example )
Your shampoo has to change, SLS & Parabin free shampoo has been around for years, it’s not a fad nor are the benifits a myth. We use Alfa Parf which there range is SLS free
Never use OIL NEVER EVER! Coats your hair, heats up hair and causes it to become brittle and color will fade.
Trim every 6-8 weeks
Don’t go over the ends every time (only when it needs it and that would be like once a year!)
Water quality & Chlorine from swimming plays a large part in it also so try to avoid hard water and pools or better still put it in a cap and use a little uv protection to help chemical absorbing.
Got a problem with your color? Ask us anything we are happy to help.
So here it is a token DIY post because we live in a material world and the land of no budgets, everyone wants a solution that even as far fetched it may, just may work wonders!
But guess what, it doesn’t. The reality is this if you want to shave your head please feel free to do it at home, I do lol. If you think you can cut your bangs, well we don’t charge our clients for that anyway so why on earth would you?
If your thinking of coloring, chances are to get the right color you would need to invest more money in total than what it would cost for us to do it. But if you did do it then chances are ( not saying your not awesome but some things take years to learn can’t be learnt on YouTube )
Using food, oils and all sorts of mixtures as a miracle treatment for damaged hair? Reality is foods and oils in fact can create bacteria on the scalp which in turn may end up causing either hair loss or dry scalp! There are two treatments we recommend 1. linseed treatments by Alfa Parf 2.Olaplex if the hair is fried dead!
We encourage you to blow it out by yourself and are always here to rectify if when things go south. If your on a budget and we all are we suggest dropping in having a chat and seeing how the result can be achieved within your limits and get hair you love.
When we are born out hair & skin can be a different color, for some it can be dramatic for me my hair was blonde but it’s not now. Over time your hair and skin change color, it’s life. For you to look natural over time your hair needs to be slightly lighter.
There is more to colouring hair than just covering grey, or having one solid color which can look as fake as wearing a wig! Hair naturally will have various shades, multiple tones from roots to ends and different reflects in light that you will never be able to achieve out of a box!
One of the most common issues we see with people colouring their hair at home is using the wrong color as well as a complete blanket coverage that leaves you looking like, well not as natural as you thought.
Some color myths answered
Can you change your diet to stop your hair going grey? No
Will colouring your hair make it grey? No
Will colouring your hair make it fall out? No
Should the ends be slightly lighter than the roots if I want it to look natural? Yes
If your colouring to cover grey then keep in mind that the darker you color it the faster you will notice the white hair.
If your colouring for attitude or a fashion result then the rules are up to you!
It’s not a new request to get asked for DIY instructions, just like chefs get asked for the recipe it’s never going to be the same. Well for me anyway doesn’t help even with YouTube, maybe get you closer to getting the end result but there is always hidden issues.
After training for 4 years to become a qualified hairstylist you can never put that amount of info on the back of a box no matter how small the font.
